There are several instructions the Lasik surgery patient must follow immediately and up to two weeks after the operation. The most important is to avoid rubbing your eyes. This can loosen the corneal flap that was altered during the Lasik procedure leading to the need to seek immediate attention. The Lasik surgeon will probably prescribe eye drops that are to be used. The eye drops will aid in avoiding inflammation and to help the eye to heal properly. In the first 24 to 48 hours, expect to see your doctor to have the patch(s) removed, and you may be able to return to work.
For the next month, after a Lasik procedure you will be instructed to avoid contact or vigorous sports, swimming, saunas, and makeup. You should also avoid using creams or lotions around or on the eye lids. The Lasik doctor will most likely insist upon your wearing glasses to help with your vision if problems persist, but you will not be able to wear contacts. It is normal for Lasik surgery patients to experience burning, itching, and some mild discomfort; however, if you experience severe discomfort, you should contact your doctor immediately.
Your Lasik surgeon may recommend wearing dark glasses and should give you sleep goggles. These goggles will help you to keep from rubbing your eyes during sleep. You may experience some redness, and it’s a good idea to use artificial tears, check with your Lasik surgeon on the frequency and types acceptable for use. If there are complications and you need a second operation, you will have to wait approximately three months for the eye(s) to heal. Some conditions such as halos or glares may be permanent, even if a second Lasik surgery has to be performed. With this and any other surgery it is vital to understand the possible complications that may arise. Make sure to ask your Lasik physician lots of questions so you are comfortable and well informed before the procedure.
