You will realize later that this is actually not a recipe but more of a guide on how to make homemade tacos. What we want to do is to help you in choosing the right taco shell, fillings, level of spiciness, sauce, and the toppings. If you want a real recipe, stick around and who knows maybe we can make one for you guys!
First things first. Decide on whether to use corn or flour for the taco shell. The corn ingredient is unique to the authentic Mexican-style tacos. Corn tacos will have this sweet and almost nutty flavor, reminding you of true Mexican flavor. If you’re looking for pliability and a little bit of Tex-Mex, flour tortillas will be a better choice as they’re great in dishes in which the taco needs to be folded or manipulated.
Next, ask yourself, what will I use to fill the tacos? This will actually depend on personal preference. You can put in ground meat like sausage, pork, beef, turkey, and chicken. Some would even add scrambled eggs while others will throw in anything they had for leftovers the previous night. If you want a vegetarian taco, tofu will work but other vegetables, like sweet potato, tomatoes, and kale are also good options. It really depends on what you like but do try some experimenting too.
Now it’s time to play some Spice Girls music to spice up your life. Or you can just add Sriracha to your tacos, your choice. Another amazing tip to bring your tacos to its spicy potential: add crushed dried chili peppers to the pan as you saute your fillings. And don’t forget the sauce too! You can buy a jar of ready made salsa or you can make your own using tomatoes and tomatillos.
Of course, just like pizza, a taco is not complete without its toppings. Mix grated cheese on put it on top. Your choices can range from feta, fresh cheese, cheddar, and even mozzarella are good choices. We recommend also adding sliced radish, cabbage, and pickled onions. Finally, squeeze a zest of lemon or lime on top of it. Enjoy your tacos and tell us how your party goes!
