What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

October 26, 2015 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Aging, acne, or chronic sun exposure can leave your face with blotches, scars, wrinkles, or lines. Not to worry though because there is a cosmetic procedure available today that can help your skin look younger and healthier. What is it? It’s Laser Skin Resurfacing, of course.

Laser skin resurfacing procedures are very popular and effective for the purpose of helping rejuvenate the skin and reduce the damage done by exposure to the sun, aging, and some facial skin disorders too. These procedures are known to be safe, effective, and convenient. Also, each procedure is not that expensive as compared to those of the surgical and invasive types. The average cost for laser skin resurfacing is about $2,300 but costs may vary widely depending on the extent of the procedure and where the procedure is being done.

Sometimes it is also called laser peel, maybe due to its nature of removing damaged skin layer by layer.  In addition to this peeling-like effect, it also works by stimulating the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying layers, which brings about smoother, younger, and healthier-looking skin. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin layer by layer efficiently without the need of surgery or anything invasive. The procedure can be done alone or with other cosmetic surgical procedures but it in itself is enough to show visible results.

Laser resurfacing is done by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. It’s an outpatient procedure which means that you can go home after the procedure. There are currently only two types of lasers most commonly used: carbon dioxide and erbium. Each laser vaporizes skin cells damaged at the surface-level.

What areas can be treated with resurfacing? The doctor may treat the skin around your eyes, mouth, or forehead individually or treat your entire face, if you wish. For small areas, the doctor will numb the areas to be treated with a local anesthetic. On the other hand, you may require general anesthesia if your whole face is being treated. Treating just a portion of the face takes about 30 to 45 minutes while a full-face treatment may takes up to two hours max. Healing usually takes two to three weeks but there will still be redness which will eventually resolve in two to three months.

So what are you waiting for? Call your plastic surgeon now to find out more!
