Grilling meat truly gives it great flavor, however, this taste comes at a price. The process creates molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which, if ingested regularly, increase the eater’s chances of developing colon cancer. Good news is, new studies suggest have found a solution to this – add beer. So, how does this beer marinade work? We also have here a beer marinade recipe for a grilled steak!
Health Benefits of Beer
One way of preventing formation of harmful molecules is by applying chemicals called antioxidants that eliminate free radicals. Beer, surprisingly, is rich in these. Antioxidants in beer are called melanoidins, which form when barley is roasted. So, whenever you do add beer, you are not having just a tasty dish, its healthy too!
Beer and Brown Sugar Steak Marinade
After learning that beer indeed makes your grilled food healthier, why don’t we test it? Here is a recipe of a beer and brown sugar type of marinade for steak. Note that you can use any type of beer you want. We recommend though to use black beer since it has more melanoidins than light beers. This recipe takes around 30 minutes to prepare and around 15 minutes to cook.
Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
How to Prepare
Preheat your grill to high heat.
Use a fork to poke holes all over the surface of the steaks then place them in a large baking dish. In a bowl, mix together the beer, teriyaki sauce, and brown sugar.
Pour sauce over steaks, and let sit about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with 1/2 the seasoned salt, pepper, and garlic powder; set aside for 10 minutes.
Turn steaks over, sprinkle with remaining seasoned salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and continue marinating for 10 more minutes.
Remove steaks from marinade. Pour marinade into a small saucepan, bring to a boil, and cook for several minutes.
Lightly oil the grill grate then grill steaks for 7 minutes per side. During the last few minutes of grilling, baste steaks with boiled marinade to enhance the flavor and ensure juiciness.
