Effects Of Hair Straightening

December 15, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Hair straightening can make your hair look beautifully symmetric in an instant. It can even transform frizzy curls into straight and silky hair in a snap. The makeover looks so beautiful that we often rush to get our hair straightened without even knowing its effects. It is important to be aware of the right technique as well as the side effects of hair straightening so, here we are to tell you what they are exactly.

Hair Straightening Explained

Hair can be straightened at home or in salon. In any case, the straightening is done on temporary basis. You may then need to have it done repeatedly to maintain the look. Chemicals are used for straightening hair in salons along with hair dryers and straightening irons. The curlier the hair is, more these products are used and the damage done is comparatively more.

What Are Things To Watch Out For?

The actual effect of the chemicals and the dryers is that they make the hair dry and that makes it brittle. The hair can get extremely damaged and in some cases they get burnt also. The negative effects that occur here are relatively much higher than other styling done to your hair.

What Causes These Side Effects?

Hair is susceptible to chemicals and heat which are the main culprits of the effects. Sometimes, it may seem that straightening hair will do more damage than benefits to your hair. What can make it worse is incorrect straightening technique as this can be dangerous and may lead to permanent hair damage. However, hair salons and hair experts are extremely careful performing the procedure so damage is unlikely in these cases.

DIY

Be sure that the iron is not too hot and apply it to hair in small portions carefully. It is better to move the iron gently down the hair and then leave it slowly. If the outcome is below your satisfaction level, you can follow the process all over again. But never ever stop the iron on any part of the hair. However, remember that when you straighten your hair at home, don’t expect to have results comparable to what you get in a salon. It is rarely perfectly sleek and smooth if you DIY. Over processing may cause damage to the hair and under processing will not give you proper results. You will have to choose the right combination carefully.

Precautions

Use the dryer and straightener occasionally and sparingly. Make sure your hair is conditioned, dry and you should also coat it with heat protective product before using a straightening iron. The thinning of the hair causes breakage so do use a deep conditioner when you shower your hair. If you are choosing hair straightening process done at home, select the dryer or the straightener that is based on ionic systems. This is because their heating surface is non-sticky and causes less damage to the hair.

Ask For Help

If you are afraid of DIY but still want to get your hair straightened, you should approach a good salon that has experience and expertise. However, you can also have silky straight hair and minimize the damage if you use the chemical and the iron less frequently. What do I mean? To give your hair a break, try other styling ways. But if it’s a quick fix you want, ironing your hair won’t be that bad.
