Interested in getting a massage anytime soon? In recent articles, we’ve taken you to places across the globe, from Singapore to Thailand, discussing robots and snails. Now we move to another part of Asia specializing in the art of massage – Indonesia. This time, no more weird stuff. We talk specifically about the popular Balinese Massage and why you should try it out yourself now.
Origins of Balinese Massage
Balinese massage is an approach to massage developed in the Indonesian province of Bali. It has influence from the traditional medicine systems of India, China, and Southeast Asia. Inspirations originated from both Ayurveda, or traditional Indian medicine, and Chinese acupressure. Balinese traditional medicine, however, was first documented by a Doctor W. Weck, a Dutch man, in the 1930’s.
How It’s Done
Balinese massage is a full-body, deep-tissue, holistic treatment. It uses a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and “qi” (energy). It also uses skin rolling and flicking, firm and gentle stroking, percussion, and application of essential oils. The massage therapist may also apply stone massage if he or she wishes.
Benefits
Balinese massage is a good treatment to choose if you want to relax, or if you’re feeling a bit low. What are the benefits though? The result is an increased sense of well-being, calmness, and deep relaxation. Both manual therapy and aromatherapy components aim to relax your body and loosen facial restrictions. In addition, it also intends to stimulate the lymphatic system and the flow of blood and qi.
