Congratulations! You are having your dream home built and everything is going according to plan… or is it? Have you really thought the whole thing through? This is again, your dream house, and it will be harmful to make a lot of mistakes because you can’t just push a do-over button, right? So it is important to plan carefully and avoid these home building mistakes:
1.Acting as your own home builder
This is a house we are talking about not a piece of furniture or a simple home repair project. There’s no DIY option here. Also, do realize that most home builders are actually not building your home. Home builders contract the work out to many subcontractors and subcontractors hire more subcontractors themselves. It’s a complicated process, trust me, don’t do it yourself.
2.Poor space planning
Unless you have plans to build a very large home, space planning and design is very crucial. How many bedrooms do you need? How many bathrooms do you need? Should there be a closet for the hallway? Answers to these questions will mainly depend on your family size, lifestyle, and the number of people you expect to live and visit your home.
3. Poorly lit homes
There should be adquate light fixtures and outlets. As should windows. Windows should be present in every room and as large as possible. Natural light, when possible, should be the main source of light.
4. Under-utilized rooms
Planning to have a playroom built? What about a game room? A multipurpose room perhaps? All these sound nice to have initially but do make sure to use them once they are built. Or better yet, think it over, do you really need these rooms? Usually, unused rooms becomes a dumping ground to place those things that never get used. And eventually, you’ll decide to convert it into another bedroom. What a waste of money, right?
5. Not buying plans
Prospective home owners think that they are saving money by not buying plans. Nothing could be more wrong though. All they see is that “I saved $400 up front. How smart I am.” But they don’t realize how many mistakes are made without plans. If there are mistakes that are made because you didn’t invest in plans, these are not the contractor’s fault. What’s worse is you get to pay for these mistakes.
In summary, home building mistakes can be prevented by proper planning. Poor planning and budgets that are too small can lead way to some wayward, inconvenient and disastrous mistakes. When you plan on building a new home, you must look at the home from many angles.
