Should You Get A Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that is done to give a more youthful facial appearance to patients. It is technically known as a rhytidectomy, and it generally involves tightening wrinkles and saggy skin on the face and neck caused by aging or weight loss.

There are multiple surgical techniques known today. The differences are mostly the type of incision, the invasiveness and the area of the face that is treated. Each surgeon practices multiple different types of this surgical procedure.  Sometimes, the plastic surgeon removes excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues. Redraping of the skin on the patient’s face and neck is also done.

Who can undergo rhytidectomy? If you have one or more of the following, then you may be a candidate:

• Sagging in the middle of your face
• Deep creases below the lower eyelids
• Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
• Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
• Loss of skin tone in the lower face that creates jowls
• Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can give even a person of normal weight the appearance of a double chin

However, a facelift procedure should not be mistaken as having the same results as taking a bath from the fountain of youth. There are limitations and you should be made aware of these to make realistic expectations. Like, for example, a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process.

A facelift can only be performed surgically; non-surgical rejuvenation treatments cannot achieve the same results, but may help delay the time at which a facelift becomes appropriate and complement the results of surgery.
