Cartilage is an important part of our bodies. It serves a few different purposes and may be more common than you think. Much of our face has the stuff on it, in fact it’s what we pierce for the most part. Here are some interesting details on cartilage and how it works.
Cartilage in joints
This is one of the most important uses cartilage has when it comes to the human body. In joints, it works as a barrier. It is between our bones, and makes sure that they don’t grind against each other. As you may have guessed, this is a somewhat important thing. Sometimes, when cartilage wears down we can develop osteoarthritis in our joints. This happens when two or more bones rub against each other and start to wear down. Our cartilage lays between bones to prevent this. Its’ rubbery texture plays a big part in protecting our bones. The protective tissue even produces its’ own lubricant to further prevent wear.
Where else is cartilage?
As we know, cartilage is found between our bones within joints. There is also some on our face: our noses are made of cartilage as well as our ears. More places that have cartilage are the ends of our ribs, within our airways and also between every piece of vertebrae that makes up our spines. The stuff really is everywhere.
The barrier is very important in our daily lives and helps us in all kinds of ways. It’s there so we can bend, lift, run and even add our own style if we want. It is a popular place for piercings as we see many on the nose and ears. Make sure to take care of your cartilage so it can keep doing what it does best. That is keep your bones healthy so you can do all the things you want to.
