At this point in summer, many of us will have our air conditioners running as hard as we can get them. Though when was the last time you had some air conditioner maintenance done? Of course, it can get costly when you’re hiring someone to fix your aircon. This is almost inevitable, especially when they start making noises they shouldn’t. A lot of the time though, there are things we can do ourselves to keep our air conditioners going for longer. As with many things: if you take care of it, it’ll take care of you.
Prepare!
First, you’ll need to take a look at how it’s all held together. You won’t want to be looking around any more than you have to for that one screwdriver when the time comes. Prepare yourself instead beforehand. If you don’t have what you need, get it and make sure you know where it all is. You’ll need a screwdriver or even a spanner of some kind so that you’re able to open the outside and inside parts of the unit. Check both though, as they might need different tools. Cleaning products are next: as long as you have something to clean and something to disinfect you should be fine. A hose for the outside will be useful too! Make sure though that any power going to the conditioner unit is turned off! Accidents can happen and risking electrocution is not something to think lightly of.
Cleaning up the intake
Of course, the outside section of our air conditioners can get real messy real quick. This is understandable, it’s outside after all. Leaves, dirt and all kind of other things can make blockages or even damage your machine. Cleaning it out can be a simple task once you know what to do though. First, you’ll need to open the unit and remove the fan with its’ cage, clean this as necessary. The condenser coils are next, these you’ll want to use a cleaning agent on. Let the cleaner sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse it off with a hose from the inside of the condenser. In some cases, some parts of the fins may need to be straightened. Other than that, there is really nothing else needed to do outside.
The indoor unit
This part of your air conditioner maintenance is more fiddly than it is messy. You’ll need to clean out the filters first. You can access these by taking out the grill of the unit, the filters should be right behind it. Simply cleaning out the filters can be a big help for your unit. For those that really want to get involved, you can clean out your unit’s fan coil too, though this likely includes removing the entire casing. Otherwise, make sure to disinfect your unit and put it back together. This will keep your unit running smoothly, your air clean and your rooms cool.
