Vitamins For Healthy Bones

February 13, 2017 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

The bones in our body are the main support structures. These dense and sturdy organs make it possible for us to walk, run, lift, carry, and just simply move. It is, therefore, very important to keep them healthy to prevent malfunction or fragility. But how do we do that though? Here are some vitamins you can take to promote healthy bones:

Which Vitamins Should You Take to Promote Healthy Bones?

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced in your skin in response to sunlight. It is true that getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D is important for normal growth and development of bones. In addition though, Vitamin D is also good for your teeth and it also improves resistance against certain diseases. The two main ways to get vitamin D are by exposing your bare skin to sunlight and by taking vitamin D supplements.

Calcium

Almost every cell in the body uses calcium in some way, including the nervous system, muscles, and heart. In addition, it is definitely an essential building block for lifelong bone health in both men and women. In fact, if you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, your body will take calcium from your bones. This then will eventually result to weakened bones or osteoporosis. We recommend that you get your daily calcium needs from food like yogurt, cheese, milk, and tofu.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

You probably already know that omega 3 fatty acids reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and prevents age-associated cognitive decline. But did you know that these vitamins can also increase bone mineral content which, in turn, produces healthier, stronger bones?  This is possible because the omega 3 fatty acids defend our bones against osteoporosis and they do this by lessening inflammation.

The Right Kind of Food

Although technically not actual vitamins, the right kind of food do contain vitamins that are essential for healthy bones.  On the other hand, a diet full of processed food will result to conditions in your body that will decrease bone density. So, as a way to counter this, focus on eating high-quality, organic,  and locally-grown food. If you do, your bone density will naturally increase.
