Mercedes Benz is developing a new Digital Headlight technology which will have the ability to intelligently detect and precisely adapt, based on the incoming environment and traffic. The technology could be used so that drivers are able to see what is coming up, and to highlight and warn them as to what is approaching. This will be able to help the driver, and minimize the chance of an accident occurring.
Mercedes calls this new technology “Digital Light” and it utilizes two million micro-mirrors in it’s construction to which the standard headlights are directed towards.
The beauty of this new technology comes through it’s use of software and sensors, where the vehicle is able to collect data about the incoming conditions. So through the use of this data, Mercedes’ software will accurately and precisely switch the millions of mirrors on or off. This changes what the Digital Headlights project. This will be used to avoid dazzling other drivers or pedestrians. Or in it’s most exciting use, to project guides onto the ground in front of the vehicle. These guides will display symbols to alert the driver to approaching potential hazards.
The adaptability of these lights are endless, they could be used to indicate or highlight any number of hazards. They could be used to project a hazard sign in front of a large pothole or other road hazard which may cause damage. To light up a digital marked crosswalk in front of a pedestrian at night. Highlight changing road conditions such as snow or ice. Ensure the driver is aware of an incoming stop sign. Or in a lighthearted use, just to display funny symbols or text.
This new Digital Headlight technology by Mercedes provides exciting advances into the automotive industry and the ever growing need and concern for safety on our roads.
