What to Expect After a Breast Reduction

December 16, 2015 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

I’m sure you have heard of some of the most common plastic surgical procedures available today like breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and the like. Does breast reduction ring a bell to you? What do you expect from a breast reduction procedure?

One of the most common surgical procedures is the Breast Reduction surgery. Reduction Mammoplasty, also known as Breast Reduction, is a procedure wherein some of the tissue and skin from the breasts are reshaped and removed to reduce the size of the breasts. It is done frequently in a hospital or a surgical center, typically with general anesthesia.

Breast reduction is resorted to when a person feels uneasy of her breast size. Large, heavy breasts cause back pains, neck pains, and posture complications. Also, breasts that are large often limits the participation of persons in sports and other activities. Some physical activities for women with large breasts find it uncomfortable to move and painful when dealing with strenuous undertakings.

After a breast reduction procedure, here’s what’s mostly gonna happen:

  • The breasts will be covered with gauze immediately after the surgery, and wrapped with elastic bandage, supported with a special surgical bra. This bra will help with the healing process and minimize the pain from the surgery
  • In some cases, a tube will be attached in each breast to dispel blood and fluid for the first couple of days. This will aid in the prevention from infections. The surgeon will probably prescribe you antibiotics to decrease the risk of infection.
  • Expect slight breast pains and mild discomforts. Your surgeon will prescribe you proper pain-relieving medicines to help you with the distresses.
  • Several bruising and swelling may appear on the surface of your breast. It may last for several weeks. Again, the recommended special bra can help reduce the swelling and support the breasts’ healing process.
  • Avoidance from strenuous work and social activities within a couple of weeks. You will likely resume your work and exercise after 3-4 weeks, or with instruction and approval from your surgeon.
  • There will be visible scars on your breasts. But you need not worry because those scars will fade over time.
  • You will need to do follow-up appointments with your surgeon for the removal of bandages and stitches.
