Estate Jewelry Facts

March 3, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

If you’re crazy over jewelry but find yourself unable to look for jewelry pieces that interest you in today’s design trends, then it’s probably time to look for estate jewelry. What is estate jewelry though? How is it different from antique and vintage jewelry?

Estate jewelry is any piece of jewelry that is second hand or previously owned. In some cases, the previous owner is already deceased and in other cases the previous owner just may have decided to sell his or her own items. On the other hand, antique jewelry is 100 years old or older while vintage jewelry refers to attractive design elements of a certain period that are still appealing to many people today.

Estate jewelry pieces are not necessarily that old. In fact, some jewelers and dealers generally limit the term “estate” to jewelry that was made within the last 30 years.  Anytime this term is used to describe a piece of jewelry that may look like it’s much older than 30 years, inquire about the exact age with the seller.

Want to buy estate jewelry to wear? Remember that estate jewelry pieces such as a ring or a bracelet is an original piece designed for a specific person and therefore, sized for that person. So do not be surprised if, a vintage estate ring for example, does not finger because its too small. If you plan to wear the jewelry, be sure to check or ask for the exact dimensions and sizing of the piece.

Fine jewelry, including estate jewelry, lasts for generations if stored with proper care, gentle cleaning, and occasional maintenance. Store each estate piece in its own box or jewelry cabinet compartment. Or you can put it on display in a glass cabinet too if you have one. For more info about storing jewelry properly, click here.

Do tell us your estate jewelry stories! Or better yet, send us photos of you wearing your favorite estate piece!
