Chiropractic Safety Concerns

March 11, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Are you still hesitant whether you should undergo chiropractic or not? Why so? Is it because of the chiropractic safety concerns that you are imagining or hearing of? Here we tell you what’s true and what’s not.

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free and non-invasive therapeutic modalities available for the treatment of back pain, neck pain and joint pain of the arms or legs, as well as headaches, and a variety of conditions involving the bones and muscles. Chiropractors ensure the safety of each patient in their treatment methods by focusing on the needs of individual patients, using mild or non-force techniques. Because chiropractic is non-invasive and does not involve the use of pharmaceuticals, it is generally very safe too.

Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects or complications, just like any medicine in the market out there and any known surgical procedure.  The risks associated with undergoing chiropractic, however, are very minute. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, and they go home feeling better and brand new, without any complications.

Chiropractors ensure each patient’s safety by performing several tests in order to minimize risks, and patients are also always informed of any potential problems from various treatment options before they undergo any procedure.

Also, chiropractic adjustment is safe when it’s performed by someone trained and licensed to deliver chiropractic care. So do some research first! Find out the credentials of each chiropractor, which may also include their educational background.

One often noted risk of injury for chiropractic patients appears to be a very rare association between cervical manipulation and damage of the vertebral artery, which could possibly lead to stroke. Again, specific tests are done and designed to predict and to minimize this very rare but potential risk.

As a precaution however, most chiropractors will suggest that you do not undergo go chiropractic treatments if you have:

  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg
  • Cancer in your spine
  • An increased risk of stroke
  • Excessive motion in the spine (instability)

These conditions put you at higher risk for complications, so do consult your general physician first before going to a chiropractor.
