First thing’s first. Don’t panic, and don’t rush to cut it off either. There are some simple things you can do in removing a stuck ring.

Use something slippery an apply it on your finger. A lot of safe household items can be used as lubricants to get the ring off in one piece and with minimal damage to both the skin and the ring. Ammonia-based cleaners such as Windex often work best too. Try any of these, using a generous amount at least as far as the knuckle: hand lotion, petroleum jelly, soap and water, baby oil, and butter.

Elevate the arm. If you still can’t remove the ring, try elevating the arm above shoulder level for a few minutes. This makes all the blood from your hands pool downwards, making your finger’s diameter smaller, just a little bit.

If the jewelry permits moisture, dip your hand in cool water. Place the hand in cool, but not ice cold, water and leave it there for a few minutes. The skin on your finger will become slippery as it absorbs the water.

You can also use a shoelace or dental floss in removing a stuck ring. Do this by wrapping either material around your finger, starting near the ring then moving upwards. Wind snuggly, but not so tightly that it causes pain or cuts off your finger’s circulation. Wrapping a shoelace or dental floss will also decrease you finger’s diameter. Pull the ring slowly to remove it.

After you have removed your ring, tend to any injuries first.. Also, don’t put the ring back on until it has been re sized or the swelling has gone down.
