Common Renting Problems

June 24, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

We are now talking to you from a perspective of a renter or a possible tenant. What are some common renting problems you will most likely encounter? This is a good heads up for all of you deciding whether to get a rental or just have your own home built.

You can’t put your own mark on your space.

Depending on your landlord, painting the walls to customize it as your own could be out of the question. But there are other ways to inject your personal style into a space. Cover up what you don’t like, add in lots of things you do. Add furniture and decor if you must.

Kitchens and bathrooms.

Let’s face it. You are living in someone else’s space so you have had no say in how things were built. If you don’t like the kitchen or the bathroom, then try adding things that are more “you”. Change the shower curtains, buy a coffee maker, use your own kitchen tools, etc. It’s all about adjusting properly.

Not-so-good furniture

Landlords have a legal duty to provide furniture of a certain standard. And by a certain standard, it means of adequate quality. Again, what you can do is hide or cover up what you don’t like and then add in more of “you” in your temporary space.

Not enough lighting

You can always supplement already-installed-overhead fixtures with floor or table lamps. Accessory lighting is better for ambiance, anyway. Plus, you get the opportunity to add style of your liking with proper selection of the lamps.

The landlord’s right of entry

Your landlord has a right to reasonable access to carry out repairs and the right to enter the property to inspect the state of repair or to empty a fuel slot meter. It may become intrusive at times but he or she still needs to ask your permission.

Not enough storage

Rental units are known to lack in storage. What you can do is have temporary wardrobes, bookshelves and out-in-the-open garment racks in the meantime. If all else fails, try using storage units.

What about you guys? What bad experiences did you have as a tenant? Do share your renting problems stories!
