September 30, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

No one likes bad breath. We brush our teeth regularly and even use mouthwash whenever we can to prevent it. However, for must of us, the problem is inevitable no matter how hard we try. Or, you might not have it but you may know someone who does and its affecting your interaction with him or her. So how do we get rid of bad breath anyway?

What Causes Halitosis

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be an embarrassing problem to anyone.  It can be caused by dry mouth, tobacco products, a medical disorder, as well as eating certain types of food. How does food cause halitosis? All the food eaten begins to be broken down in your mouth. If you eat food with strong odors, brushing and using mouthwash will merely cover up the odor temporarily. The odor will not go away completely too until the foods have passed through your body.

Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be symptoms of periodontal diseases as well. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. In addition, bacteria in your mouth may cause the formation of toxins which then irritate the gums too.  Other dental causes of bad breath include poorly fitting dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and dental caries.

Treatment for Halitosis

The odor often depends upon the source or underlying cause of halitosis. However, many individuals with bad breath may be unaware they have it. So if you know someone who has it but apparently has good oral hygiene, find a way to tell them. Who knows, you might have helped him or her identify an underlying condition.  Usually, the most effective treatment is improving your dental hygiene. As part of your daily routine, you should:

  • Floss between your teeth
  • Brush your teeth and gums
  • Clean your tongue
  • Use mouthwash, as needed

If, however, symptoms persist, despite these measures, we advise that you see a dentist first. Your dentist may be able to identify the cause and can then recommend steps on how to treat it.
