Managing Spinal Fractures with Chiropractic

October 31, 2016 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Chiropractic care has many benefits, we know that. It can help relieve back pain, headaches, poor posture, and even some types of arthritides.  We know give you some evidence that chiropractic may even be capable of managing spinal fractures. We’d want you to see a physician first but if you need a second opinion, this will be a good alternative.

What are Fractures?

A fracture, simply put, is a break in a bone. This condition can range from small cracks to severe full breaks possibly affecting the stability and integrity of the bone. Fractures can result from a number of different situations too. Bones of older women suffering from osteoporosis, for example, are more prone to breaks and cracks. Young children are similarly susceptible too, as their bones have not fully developed yet.

Types of Spinal Fractures

In this article, we specifically focus on compression spinal fractures. Compression fracture occurs when the spine collapses with subsequent compression of the surrounding structures. However, sometimes compression fractures can be so small and be left undetected. Patients then start to complain of nagging back pain.

How Chiropractors Can Help

Chiropractors can help alleviate some of the immediate and long-term concerns related to fractures. A chiropractor may not perform physical treatments until the fracture has begun to heal and inflammation is reduced. However, a chiropractor can help with compression techniques that are useful in keeping the bone in place for proper healing. A chiropractor will also recommend comprehensive wellness techniques, such as proper diet, which will optimize the body’s ability to heal quicker. Chiropractors may also perform and instruct a patient on a variety of stretches and exercises that will promote quicker healing and reduce the likelihood of future complications.
