How to Boost Brain Power of Children

March 3, 2017 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Do you want to make your child grow up smart? Do you want him or her to excel in all endeavors independently? Do you want them to have awesome problem solving skills and logic? If you answered yes, then you should definitely start the boosting of brain power early.  At birth, your baby’s brain contains 100 billion nerve cells that are responsible for intelligence and cognition. During his or her first years, he will then grow trillions of brain cell connections, called neural synapses. You as a parent can start early by enhancing these connections. So, here now are some ways to boost brain power:

Prenatal Measures

Start the process as early as pregnancy. Be aware that certain chemicals can be destructive to your baby’s brain so avoid drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Many children who were drug-abused in the womb struggle with severe learning problems and suddenly act with unprovoked aggressive behaviors. Studies have also revealed that cigarette smoking during pregnancy causes lower fourth-grade reading scores.

Talk to Your Baby

Now, it will make sense to you why you see mothers baby talking to their infants. However, we do suggest that, instead of simply talking to him or her, focus on having meaningful conversations. Do this by responding to coos and babbles with delighted vocalizations. Slowly draw out your syllables in a high-pitched voice and sound silly as you can be. The areas in the brain for understanding speech and producing language need your contributions as well.

Respond To Cries

There are different types of cries that you should know as a parent and we will discuss them soon on a separate article. Until your baby learns to talk, crying is his or her first means of communication. For infants, crying can mean a range of many and equally important feelings. Soothe, nurture, cuddle, and reassure him or her so that you build positive brain circuitry in the area of the brain which relates to emotions. Your calm holding and cuddling, as well as your day-to-day intimate engagement with your baby, all signals emotional security to the brain.

Appropriate Toys

If it is not possible to let your toddler play outdoors while you guide him ore her, use toys instead. Choose developmentally appropriate toys that allow babies to explore and interact. Also be aware and stray from toys that are choking hazards and those with toxic chemicals. Toys such as a windup jack-in-the-box or stackable blocks are good as they teach cause-and-effect relationships and “if-then” reasoning.

Discipline Properly

You might question this part and ask what, if anything, has it have to do with boosting brain power. Discipline is an important part of learning that manifests as the child grows up. It will, in the future, mold study habits and time management. However, once your infant grows up to be a toddler or you child, never ever use physical force to mold his or her behavior. Instead, create clear verbal consequences without frightening or causing shame to your child.  You can do this by using a very low tone of voice while scolding him or her. Also, remember to keep rules simple, consistent, and reasonable for your child’s age too. Be lenient on younger children while strictly reinforce their older counterparts.
