3D Printed Jewelry

October 16, 2018 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

You can get customized 3D printed jewelry though several online sources. The world we live in now is simply stunning. Whether you create these works of art yourself, find a freelance designer or even find free plans online! The process for 3D printing jewelry depends on the material.

The most common material choice for jewelry is often metal. For the highest quality metal prints, the design is first made in wax. The piece is typically inspected and moved to make a mold for the metal cast at this point. Then the wax is burned out and the cast filled with the appropriate metal. FInishing touches are added and in often less than a week you have your customized, often entirely unique piece of jewelry. Now, some home models of 3D printers are starting to offer metal filament but often these home models do not offer the impressive detail that the commercial models do.

For PLA jewelry, which is a rigid plastic, if great detail is not needed then a home model 3D printer may be suitable. This puts 3D printed jewelry in the hands of almost everyone. There are online programs or even forums online that will share free designs or teach you how to make your own designs. Which may be an excellent option for the budding artists or those with a very specific idea i mind. Typically a piece made in this material will be directly printed and then finished.

There are also quite flexible filaments such as thermoplastic elastomer or TPE is an incredibly flexible material that gives freedom of movement to your designs. Or an even more environmentally friendly option, thermoplastic co-polyester or TPC is also available. Working with this material can be tricky as sometimes it may get stringy in complex models or clog when feeding, but it also offers possibilities that other materials would not. These materials are so flexible that you can flatten, stretch, and move the piece after it is done and it will bounce back into its formed shape.

And all of this is really only just breaking the surface of what is possible. As 3D printing technology improves, we will undoubtedly see more unique and amazing 3D printed jewelry. Maybe you will be the next big designer now that everyone is pretty much on an even playing field!
