Pizza is one of our nation’s most prized meals, making pizza sauce pretty critical. We eat a lot of pizza, and when I say a lot… I mean it is estimated at about 7,491,100,000 pounds of pizza per year here in the United States. That is roughly twenty three pounds for each person, including children! So it is no wonder that making it at home is such a popular activity. The great part is that pizza sauce can be made with common pantry ingredients for the most part and the rest of it can be based on whatever leftovers are in the refrigerator.
This pizza sauce recipe is really more of a guide to help get you your pizza fix fast. As you make this, you will learn to fine tune it to your own particular tastes. Throw the ingredients in the blender and you will be good to go, feel free to leave it a bit chunkier if that is your preference. This sauce is ready in 5-10 minutes and is super easy to throw together while the dough is proofing.
Ingredients:
- 1 – 14.5oz can of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 2-3 tablespoons of tomato paste
- ¼ cup or so of diced onion
- 1-2 cloves of garlic
- 2 teaspoons of olive oil
- 1-2 tablespoons of fresh basil leaves(1-2 teaspoons of dried)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme leaves (1 tsp of dried)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh oregano (1-2 teaspoons of dried)
- 1-2 tablespoons of parsley leaves (1-2 tsp dried)
- ¼ tsp of salt
Directions:
Put all ingredients into a high speed blender, blend for roughly 30 seconds stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. You can add the herbs right at the end to leave them in more coarse pieces. It can be particularly nice to have some fresh basil on hand to place atop the sauce after it has been spread on the pizza. Store excess in the refrigerator and use within 2-3 days. Can be used as a pasta sauce if cooked on low for 10-15 minutes to help flavors develop.
Now have an amazing pizza party and make a pizza wholly your own. No preset ingredient lists are going to hold you down!
