How to Make Cake Pops

October 21, 2015 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Cake Pops are the latest trend in the dessert culture. Easy and fun to make, cake pops have become an obsession to sugar lovers. There is definitely something about these little, chocolate-covered cakes which stand on sticks. The benefits? cake pops make no mess, no serving style needed, no cutting, and no left-overs. Your guests can just grab them on the stands without even having to huddle and sit down.

Although cake pops are time consuming, the waiting and baking would all be worth it. Just follow this step-by-step guide on how to make perfect, delectable cake pops.

Cake pops making is divided into three main steps:
1. Baking the cake
2. Rolling the cake into balls
3. Dipping the pops

Step 1:

  • Prepare a 9 x 13 cake pan and spray the inside of the pan with grease spray or spread the surface with a stick of butter. Make sure to cover all sides and spaces to avoid the cake from sticking to the pan.
  • Make a cake for your cake pops using your favorite cake recipe.
  • Allow your bake to cool once it is cooked through. Set it aside and wait for at least 30 minutes for it to be cool enough for handling.

Step 2:

  • You will need your:
    • Base cake
    • A large bowl
    • Serving spoon
    • Vanilla frosting
    • Cookie sheet
    • Small scooper (for shaping the cake)
  • Cut the outer edges or burnt sides of the cake to prevent it from making lumps in your pops.
  • Crumble the cake into very fine little crumbs until no large bits are left.
  • Once you’re done, add little amounts of vanilla frosting to the cake crumbs. This will add moisture to your cake, and it will also allow you to shape it into round pops. Be careful not to add too much icing. The can make your mixture become too moist and your pops too heavy.
  • Use your scooper to get enough mixture for a well-rounded cake ball. Your hands can also help with the shaping process to ensure all the pops are uniformed in size.
  • After shaping, transfer the balls into the cookie sheet. Tip: When placing the mixture on the cookie sheet, keep your hands moist by dampening them with water. This will help give the cake pops a good texture.
  • Cover the finished cake pops on the cooking sheet with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate them for at least 4 hours. This will allow your cake balls to harden and make Step 3 easy.

Step 3:

  • You will need your:
    • Chilled cake balls
    • Microwave safe bowl
    • Spoon
    • Skewer for making guide holes
    • Lollipop sticks
    • Food coloring
    • Candy melts
  • Remove the foil from the cake and place the balls in the refrigerator while preparing the candy melts.
  • Put the candy melt in the microwave until they are thoroughly melted. Mix drops of food coloring into the melted candy until you achieve the color desired.
  • Dip your lollipop sticks for about an inch deep in the candy melt.
  • Stick the dipped lollipop sticks to the cake balls up to the middle part of the ball.
  • Once the cake ball is stuck in the lollipop stick, completely submerge the cake pops into the candy melt. Make sure it covers the surface of the cake.
  • Allow your cake pop to drip until there are no excess candy melts.
  • Let it dry for a moment and remove extra melted candy on the stick for a neater look.
  • Skewer the cake pops into the foam block to dry.

And there you have it! Scrumptious cake pops for your families and guests to enjoy.
