Airplane Etiquette for Frequent Flyers

November 18, 2015 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Yes, we’ve all been there. We’ve traveled by air before and had some bad experiences ourselves, either because of the flight itself, or maybe because of the person sitting next to you, and it may be even because of the person sitting four seats away from you… It can be anything or everyone. What better way to make the flight more pleasant for everyone? Here now are some airplane etiquette tips.

The reality of air travel flying economy is unpleasant. However, there are ways to make flying more pleasant, but they depend on everyone’s cooperation. If you follow these tips religiously, so does everyone else, then there wouldn’t be much problems.

Utilize the overhead space above your own, and only on your own, seat row. Do not place your bags in the overhead anywhere else. We strongly advise not to place your bags in a bin near the front of the plane for a quick exit. Taking the storage space of other passengers is rude and can potentially delay departure as they search for storage.  If you have two carry-on bags, keep the smaller one at your feet.

Keep your chair upright until you are told it can be reclined. Don’t lean your chair back as soon as you take your seat. When you do recline your chair, do it slowly and carefully. Remember to return the seat back to the upright position whenever food and drinks are served too.

If you are traveling with your kids, make an extra effort to keep them in check because yes, they are your responsibility. Keep them busy with something throughout the duration of the flight. If you are one of the passengers who are being bugged by kids, talk to the parents first and don’t go immediately deciding on scolding the kid first. It’s not your place to correct the behavior of a stranger’s child, and you’re likely to get into an arguement with the parents. Just keep your cool and remember that you were a kid too.

Don’t fly drunk ore else you’ll reek of booze. It may also be difficult for people sitting next to you if you have to get up to use the lavatory every 20 minutes or so. Some flights serve alcoholic drinks and if ever you decide to have a glass or two, remember to drink moderately.

Bad body odor is a terrible thing to inflict on your fellow passengers too. So, do remember to take a shower before heading to the airport if possible. Use an antiperspirant or deodorant after you shower or the night before a flight.

On the other hand, keep in mind that overly strong cologne or perfume can be as unpleasant as well. So, unless you’re flirting with someone on the plane, don’t bombard yourself with your signature scents.
