The term one-hit wonder is most often used to describe music performers or artists with only one top single or for having one very popular song which overshadows their other work. Let’s take a look at the one hit wonders of all time, starting from not too long ago, just for the sake of remembering how they were really popular once.
Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” became popular in February 1992. Their only other charting United States single peaked at No. 76. However, in the United Kingdom, the band had other chart-topping hits.
Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” became popular in July 1992. The song reached number 1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart for five weeks and it is known today as the second best-selling song in the US in 1992, behind Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”
Crazy Town’s “Butterfly” became popular in March 2001. This song was rated number 3 on Billboard’s chart for One-hit wonders of the 2000s. In addition, it was also recognized as the 34th “Most Awesomely Bad Song Ever” by VH1.
Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” became popular in April 2006. It was the first song ever to sell 2 million digital copies in the U.S. and was certified three-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Florence + the Machine “Dog Days Are Over” became popular in October 2010. While not as immediately catchy as “Kiss with a Fist”, the hit gave Florence her first top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
La Roux’s “Bulletproof” became popular in June 2010. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 during that time, following televised performances of the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Last Call with Carson Daly.
Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” September 2011. This song became the group’s breakthrough hit, reaching the top 40 of the Hot 100 in late July and appeared on the Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 chart too.
