Aldridge Gardens

Aldridge Gardens is a 30-acre woodland garden featuring hydrangeas nestled in the heart of Hoover. In fact, for many years the property was the home of noted nurseryman Eddie Aldridge who discovered and patented the Snowflake Hydrangea. He and his wife Kay conveyed the property to the city of Hoover in 1997. Complete with a six-acre lake and walking trail, Aldridge Gardens is laden with many varieties of hydrangeas, camellias and other native Alabama plants.
Birmingham Zoo

The Birmingham Zoo is Alabama’s most popular attraction, drawing more than 500,000 visitors annually. Approximately 800 animals of 200 species call the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, rhinos and endangered species from six continents. In 1999, the Birmingham Zoo became an independent not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. In the short time following this privatization, the Birmingham Zoo has hosted traveling exhibits of bats, Koalas and Black-Footed Penguins, added permanent exhibits of a Komodo Dragon and interactive lorikeet aviary and regained accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Birmingham Museum of Art

With over 15,000 ceramics objects, Birmingham Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive ceramics collections in the Southeast, with pieces spanning the globe and thousands of years. In celebration of this collection and to learn more about the objects’ similarities and differences, BMA is hosting the inaugural Bunting Biennial Ceramics Symposium, held in conjunction with the Alabama Clay Conference from February 22-23, 2013. The symposium, “Clay Embodied: Ceramics and the Human Form,” will explore the relationship between ceramics and the human body with a schedule of prominent ceramics experts and artists.
Sloss Furnaces
Birmingham, AL
Sloss Furnaces produced iron for nearly 90 years, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham, AL. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks offers them a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and the nation. Sloss Furnaces has a history that is steeped in a 100-year tradition of iron pouring. To preserve that history they are evaluating their Metal Arts Artists-in-Residence program to provide opportunities for artists around the world to share their talents with Birmingham. Metal Arts is important to many in the art community, and remains an important part of Sloss Furnaces.
McWane Science Center

Railroad Park

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of their great city. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.
Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, is home to over 1,500 motorcycles, is dedicated to restoring, preserving, and exhibiting automotive history. It’s an exciting place to be! Each October, the museum hosts the Barber Vintage Festival, which is the largest vintage motorcycle event in the country. Each May, the museum hosts Barber Historics, which is a three-day weekend celebrating vintage cars and racing. In addition to motorcycles and cars, there are art exhibits throughout the museum and park. The museum also has two pedestrian bridges for museum members to enjoy during certain yearly events.
Vulcan Park & Museum

Vulcan, Birmingham Alabama’s colossal statue is the world’s largest cast iron statue and considered one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States. Designed by Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti and cast from local iron in 1904, Vulcan has overlooked Alabama’s largest city from atop Red Mountain since the 1930’s. This beloved symbol of Birmingham and the nation’s iron and steel industry stands preserved and proud as the centerpiece of it rehabilitated and expanded park, now referred to as Vulcan Park and Museum.
