What is Shiatsu Massage?

3 min read

What is shiatsu massage?  Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork based on the theoretical framework of traditional Chinese medicine. In the Japanese language, shiatsu means "finger pressure". While shiatsu has roots in traditional Chinese medicine, it's now commonly practiced throughout the world and your massage therapists will surely be familiar with this technique too.

Understanding the Basics

shiatsu-massage The shiatsu technique involves massaging with fingers, thumbs, and palms, as well as assisted stretching and joint manipulation and mobilization. Massage therapists perform shiatsu by applying pressure to points on the body thought to be connected to certain "meridians".

By stimulating these points, such massage therapists aim to promote the flow of vital energy. This principle is according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine which claim that blockages in the flow of chi can contribute to a wide range of illnesses. The usual shiatsu massage session takes 40 -50 minutes of hands on work, a short rest and then feedback. It is usually done on a futon, a light cotton mattress on the floor.

People getting the massage can also choose to be in a sitting position instead. It is recommended to wear loose fitting clothes, but tracksuit bottoms or light cotton trousers are ideal. Avoid having a heavy meal before the session though. Shiatsu is often used to relieve stress and protect against stress-related health issues.

In addition, shiatsu is said to help in managing the symptoms of the following health problems: anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, colds, constipation, coughs, depression, headache, insomnia, migraine, neck and shoulder pain, premenstrual syndrome, sciatica, and sinus problems. Shiatsu is also said to increase energy, promote recovery from injuries, and stimulate the digestive system.
