The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site stands just south of the Illinois Governor’s Mansion. The Home was built in the early to mid-1840’s by Henry Dresser, the man who sold Abraham Lincoln his home just a few blocks to the east.

Newly restored (2015) to its antebellum glory, this Italianate mansion was one a center for social activity in Springfield. Prominent citizens and politicians such as Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, David Davis, and numerous governors, judges, lawyers, and politicians were entertained at lavish dinner parties and the grounds played host to many summer picnics and political rallies.

The Dana-Thomas House (DTH) was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902 for Susan Lawrence Dana, a forward-thinking socialite living in Springfield, Illinois. The home, the 72nd building designed by Wright, contains the largest collection of site-specific, original Wright art glass and furniture. Wright’s first “blank check” commission, the home has 35 rooms in the 12,000 square feet of living space which includes 3 main levels and 16 varying levels in all. Rightfully regarded as a local treasure, the DTH is a gorgeous house museum.

This is one of the historic parks, developed as termini of the urban trolley line in use at the time. Washington Park contains a variety of facilities, many of them unique to the park system and some unique to the region. It is one of the most heavily used parks in the district. The park has rolling terrain, large trees and wooded areas, some deep ravines and two man-made lagoons.
