The University of Arizona assumed ownership of Biosphere 2 in July 2011. A generous gift from the Philecology Foundation helps fund Biosphere 2 operations and some research projects. Their mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe and catalyze interdisciplinary thinking and understanding about Earth and its future and distill issues related to Earth systems planning and management for use by policymakers, students and the public.
