Alexandré Mouton House

Circa 1800, the Alexandre Mouton House was built by Jean Mouton, founder of Vermilionville (present day Lafayette). The home was later occupied by his son, Alexandre Mouton, who became Louisiana’s first Democratic Governor. The home is a repository of period furnishings, historical and cultural memorabilia, Mardi Gras costumes and other art and special collections. Open to the public and available for group tours and private functions.

Acadian Village

Acadian Village, was created to serve three purposes: to preserve a piece of early Acadian heritage, to raise funds to help offset government cuts to the program, and to provide employment for LARC clients. In order to recreate a typical 1800’s Cajun village, the design team had to transform 10 acres of farmland into a shaded community with a bayou running through it. All homes show the passing of time and are remarkable examples of the ingenuity of the early Acadian homebuilders, complete with wooden pegs, mud walls, hand-hewn cypress timbers, and high-peaked roofs.

Vermilionville Historic Village

Lafayette, LA

Opened in 1990, Vermilionville is a living history museum and folklife park that promotes and propagates the cultural resources of the Acadian, Native American, and Creole people, from the time period 1765 to 1890. The park sits on a 23-acre site on the banks of the Bayou Vermilion with 19 attractions, including seven restored original homes with more than 13 local artisans that provide demonstrations on a variety of essential crafts performed by the early settlers.

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site

St. Martinville, LA

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site explores the cultural interplay among the diverse peoples along the famed Bayou Teche. Acadians and Creoles, Indians and Africans, Frenchmen and Spaniards, slaves and free people of color-all contributed to the historical tradition of cultural diversity in the Teche region. French became the predominant language, and it remains very strong in the region today.
