Seafood is not just tasty, it is also packed with nutrients that are good for our bodies! From saltwater and freshwater fish to deep water shellfish, seafood is very diverse indeed. This variety also contributes to the different nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that you can get just by eating them regularly. So what are the claimed seafood health benefits that we should know? Should these reasons be enough for us to include fish and shellfish in our diet?

Seafood Health Benefits

Have you ever wondered why the Japanese generally live longer? Have you seen what they regularly eat? Their cuisine is like anything you find directly from the sea and then subsequently served on a plate. We should definitely follow their foot steps then, right? Seafood serves as a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, studies have shown time to time. Rich in fatty acids, eating seafood regularly can help lower bad cholesterol too!

Good For Your Heart

Seafood is low in saturated fat and high in omega-3 which can both protect the heart from disease and lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood. These conditions that can be prevented include arrhythmias, strokes, and heart attacks. One study has even suggested that an extra portion of fish every week can cut risk of heart disease in half. This is also the reason why we have fish oil vitamins today – it contains omega-3. Why buy expensive vitamins when we can have this essential vitamin just by eating fish, right?

Good For Your Joints

One of the most important health benefits of eating seafood involve that of the joints. If you eat fish on a regular basis, symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may improve. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition which causes joint inflammation. Recent research has also found a link between omega-3 fats and osteoarthritis, suggesting that eating more seafood could help improve symptoms of the disease.

Good For Your Eyes

If you start eating fish regularly, your eyes will surely become bright and healthy. A recent study has suggested that omega-3 fatty acids can help to protect the eyesight too. Specifically, it improves the symptoms of those suffering from age-related macular degeneration. This is a condition which causes the retina to degenerate and the eyesight to become blurred. Fish and shellfish also contain retinol, a form of vitamin A which reduces night blindness.
